Edson Chagas (Angola) Luanda, Encyclopedic City
(Golden Lion for Best National Participation)
"When a building tends towards the encyclopedic, it becomes a city. Luanda is an encyclopedic city. How can the knowledge of a city be organized through the taxonomy of its spaces? Central to the pavilion of Angola is the reflection of how images are used to shape the way in which the city is experienced by its inhabitants." Curators: Beyond Entropy (Paula Nascimento, Stefano Rabolli Pansera), Jorge Gumbe. Commissioner: Ministry of Culture
Tino Sehgal (Great Britain)
Golden Lion (best artist in the International Exhibition Il Palazzo Enciclopedico)
Camille Henrot (France)
Silver Lion (promising young artist in the International Exhibition Il Palazzo Enciclopedico)
The refrain of Henrot's video work is "In the beginning..." The work has a sense of a-history-of-the-universe-type documentary, a context within which Henrot’s studies the creation myths of different societies via a progression of images presented through browser and computer program windows. Camille Henrot lives and works in Paris and is represented by Galerie Kamel Mennour.
